Following the recent arrest of rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, several celebrities associated with him are facing scrutiny, including megastar Jennifer Lopez. The two were in a relationship from 1999 to 2001, and during that time, Jennifer was arrested alongside Diddy after a shooting incident in New York.
They started their relationship in 1999
In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Lopez was among the many stars that Diddy mentored. Their relationship began in 1999 but ended in 2001. Over the years, Jennifer has spoken fondly of Diddy, praising him for the guidance he provided. In a 2014 interview with Access Hollywood, she remarked that he “taught her a lot” and emphasized their enduring mutual respect and admiration.
USA Today reported that her positive comments resurfaced in the context of Diddy recently naming her the winner of a “best butt” contest against Kim Kardashian.
After the breakup in 2001, she admitted that he had cheated on her
However, following their breakup, Lopez revealed that Diddy had been unfaithful. In a 2003 interview with Vibe magazine, she confirmed that infidelity was the reason for their split, saying it was her first experience with a partner who wasn’t loyal. “I was in that relationship where I was constantly crying, mad, and my whole life was a whirlwind,” she recalled.
In her 2024 documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told, Lopez reflected on her past relationships, noting that she faced “violent behavior and a few other unpleasant things,” without naming names.
J-Lo and Diddy 1999 Arrested After Shooting
The shooting incident that led to their arrest occurred in 1999 when 31-year-old Diddy was involved in a dispute at a New York nightclub, resulting in gunfire that injured three people. Both Diddy and his associate Jamal Shane Burrows were charged, but Diddy’s charges were later dismissed. A seriously injured victim, Natania Ruben, claimed that Diddy shot her in the face. She filed a $130 million lawsuit against him in 2008, which was settled out of court in 2011.
The charges against Jennifer were dismissed
Following the shooting, Diddy, Lopez, and others fled the scene. When the police stopped them, they discovered a stolen gun in the vehicle. Diddy and Lopez were initially charged with criminal possession of stolen property, but Lopez’s charges were quickly dismissed. Diddy faced additional bribery charges for allegedly offering $50,000 to a driver to take responsibility for the gun.
Lopez rarely discussed the incident but described it as a “complete nightmare” in a 2000 interview with Elle, stating, “I had absolutely no idea what was going on.”
P Diddy will remain in custody pending trial
As for her response to Diddy’s recent arrest, there has been no comment from Lopez yet. Diddy remains in custody, having been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and related crimes. A judge denied him bail, and he has pleaded not guilty, awaiting trial on serious allegations dating back to 2009.
