Kirsten Dunst, renowned for her portrayal of Mary Jane Watson in the iconic Spider-Man trilogy, still reflects on the nickname bestowed upon her during the filming days.
In an interview with Marie Claire published on Tuesday, March 5, the 41-year-old actress revealed, “It was a joke, but on Spider-Man, they would call me ‘girly-girl’ sometimes on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need girly-girl,’” mimicking a staticky radio sound.
Dunst shared that she “never said anything” at the time and “just took it,” but upon revisiting the memory, she expressed, “Like, don’t call me that.”
Addressing her recent hiatus from acting, Dunst disclosed that she has not worked for the past two years due to the prevalence of roles offered to her as the “sad mom.”
Despite the challenges of not working, she emphasized the difficulty of being a mother and feeling like she has nothing for herself, a sentiment shared by many mothers.
Dunst explained that she consciously chose not to capitalize on her Spider-Man fame to become a mainstream movie star.
Instead, she delved into artistic indie projects such as Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and Melancholia.
In 2021, she garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, where she starred alongside her husband, Jesse Plemons.
The actress expressed her preference for working with female directors, citing concerns about male directors seeing her in a certain way. She added that this preference led her to collaborate with many female directors from a young age.
Dunst, who married Plemons in 2022, spoke about their collaborative approach to acting. According to a source, acting serves as a natural extension of their relationship, allowing them to step out of their comfort zones and collaborate as a team, which they find enjoyable.
The couple, who started dating after meeting on the set of Fargo in 2015, shares two sons, Ennis and James.
They not only appeared together in The Power of the Dog but will also share the screen in their upcoming film, Civil War.
In a previous interview, Dunst revealed that they fell in love creatively first before becoming romantically involved, emphasizing their shared passion for acting and creative endeavors.
